Ahmanson Hall
Skirball Cultural Center
Los Angeles, California
Ahmanson Hall, the second phase of the Skirball Cultural Center, includes a major multipurpose auditorium and support facilities, a boardroom, gardens and parking. The challenge of designing Cotsen Auditorium was to create a versatile hall that can serve for banquets, lectures and musical performances. It can be transformed from a flat-floored space that opens into the surrounding gardens, to a tiered theater-in-the-round, meeting the acoustic requirements of chamber music. The auditorium can be filled with daylight for most uses, but can also be blacked out when required. Activities can expand into the surrounding garden accommodating several hundred guests in a banquet as well as in lectures and concerts
